Evil

I do not believe in evil.  I believe in stupidity, greed, ignorance, depression, bad luck, misinformation, fear, desire, and neglect, but not in evil. Evil is what we call things when at the end of the day, we tire of or simply don’t care enough to figure out.  If, indeed, monsters exist, then we are all monsters – fucking up various lives in our own monstrously stupid, greedy, ignorant ways.

The good thing about evil, its saving grace, the good thing about the notion of the existence of monsters, is that it let us off the hook.  We, then, are the pure of heart and intention, and we can ignore our own petty little atrocities and soul-killing behaviors.

I am a monster.  You are a monster.  We’ve all done monstrous things – whether illegal or not, whether we’re called to account for them or not.  Visit death row – all of those will say that they are good people who’ve been victimized by circumstance – upbringing, poverty, wealth – any number of social excuses. No one wants to admit to being a monster.  We are good people, but we are also monsters.
